This historic building has long been an Arivaca landmark and gathering place since the early 1900's. The exception was a period of time after the original owner sold it to the Arivaca Land and Cattle Company and it was used as a hay barn. It is located in a picturesque valley surrounded by mountains. The scenic drive along Arivaca Rd brings tourists and birdwatchers from all 50 states to favorite destinations - Arivaca Lake, the old mining town of Ruby and the Buenos Aires Wildlife Refuge. The La Gitana has always been the preferred ''watering hole'' for travelers along this route. In the 1950's the building was purchased by a local family; they added what is now the cafe area. The original section was again restored to a dance hall. The impressive mesquite horseshoe bar was created by a local craftsman. The outdoor patio is especially popular on holidays or weekends when musicians play a mix of country tunes. The name "La Gitana" means "The Gypsy" in Spanish; the name of a favorite poem of one of the early owners. La Gitana operates under a Series 6 bar license. Currently open 365 days a year, serving breakfast on the weekends and lunch/light dinner 7 days a week. The current owners, have upgraded the building while preserving the historic value.
